Liszt, Franz Hungarian composer and pianist (1811-1886) Hungarian composer and pianist. "Etudes d'exécution transcendante par F. Liszt" (Breitkipf & Härtel), 108 pages, 10¼ x 6½". Inscribed and signed "Frau Antonia Raab…F. Lizt…71" on the inside cover. Dedicated in print to Czech composer Charles Czerrny. Covers are worn, with some paper loss around edges and rough tape repair to spine. Protected by paper wrappers. Pages are toned throughout, with some soiling and a few pencil notations. Title page notes: "Seule edition authentique revue par l'auteur." Condition is good to very good.

Liszt wrote transcriptions for piano of a wide variety of music and played many of them himself. Antonia Raab was a Hungarian pianist who was a pupil of Franz Liszt; they performed together in 1881. In March 1883, Liszt composed a nocturne based on a poem by Raab: "Schlaflos! Frage und Antwort-- Nocturne nach einem Gedicht von A Raab" ["Sleepless! Question and Answer--Nocturne from the poem by A Raab"]. Raab married a member of Emperor Franz Josef's palace guard. Estimate Value $800 - 1,000

Herbert, Victor - Photograph Inscribed & Signed With Eight Musical Quotations in the Margins (1859-1924) Irish-born, German-raised American composer, cellist and conductor, best known for composing many operettas that premiered on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I. Sepia-toned photograph signed "With best wishes from Victor Herbert, April 1916," 11 x 14", no place. Herbert is seated at the piano with the music for "Natoma" in front of him. The wide margins hold eight musical quotations, four on each side, each identified in Herbert's hand. Down the left side are "Natoma," Mlle. Modiste," "Babes in Toyland" (his most famous work), and "Princess Pat (laughing Irish eyes)." Down the right side are "Madeleine," "Badinage," "The Serenade," and "The only girl." In the lower border is an original sketch of an Irish harp with "Erin go Bragh." Some closed tears along lower edge, touching the frame of the harp. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17 x 20¾". A wonderful display piece. Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,500

Kreisler, Fritz - Photo Signed by the Composer and Master Violinist (1875 - 1962) Viennese-born violinist and composer, regarded as one of the greatest violin masters of all time. Vintage sepia-toned photograph signed "Fritz Kreisler" in lower margin, 6½ x 4½". On verso is an inscription in another hand, "Concert in Colorado Springs, Colorado, October 22nd, 1915." Some silvering to photo; slight bend in upper left and lower right quandrants and a large semi-circular background blemish which crosses Kreisler's hair, none of which touches the signature. Still a striking photo. Estimate Value $200 - 300

Liszt," (Stampato colle macchine celeri del R. Stabilimento Ricordi), 13½ x 10¼", 24 pages, inscribed and signed, "à Madame de Retz --(Tony Raab) / F Liszt" in the upper left corner of the first page. Also dedicated in print, "À Mme. Tony Raab," before the title on the cover. Protected by paper wrappers. Pages toned but intact.

"Aus Richard Wagner's Opera / Transcriptionen für das Pianoforte von Franz Liszt" (Leipzig, Breitkopf & Härtel), 78 pages, inscribed and signed on the title page: "Madame Tony Raab / très affectueusement / F Liszt / Fevrier 76 - Pest" Pages are worn and toned, with numerous marginal tears, paper loss at corners, and tape repairs. Lower portion of pp 19/20 missing (from "Elsa's Brautgang zum Münster"). Transcriptions included are from "Tannhäuser," "Lohengrin," "Rienzi," "Der fliegende Holländer," and "Tristan und Jsolde." Protected by paper wrappers. Condition is good.
